ABOUT THE JOURNAL

The Selfie Studies Journal is an independent, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal dedicated to the critical, creative, and speculative study of selfies as cultural practices, relational technologies, and modes of worldmaking. 

Published by the Selfie Institute for Selfie Studies, the journal provides a shared platform for scholars, artists, activists, practitioners and any other self-identifications working with networked self-representation across contexts and disciplines.

The journal understands selfies broadly: encompassing self-portraits, networked self-imaging, avatars, filters, screenshots, live streams, AI-generated selves, and other mediated practices of appearing, withholding, and becoming visible. We approach the selfie not as a trivial or narcissistic image, but as a dense site where bodies, technologies, affects, and power relations intersect.

Selfie Studies foregrounds the selfie as both singular and collective, embodied and infrastructural, intimate and political. At a moment when self-imaging practices are deeply implicated in the negotiation of identity, labor, care, surveillance, and resistance, the journal invites work that thinks with selfies rather than merely about them.

Grounded in values of community activism, diverse coalescence, co-generation of knowledge, and radical worldmaking, Selfie Studies is committed to accessible scholarship, experimental forms, and ethical publishing practices. Rather than stabilizing a field too quickly, the journal seeks to hold space for emergence—for new methods, languages, and collectivities to take shape together.

The Selfie Studies Journal is stewarded by an international, interdisciplinary editorial collective, with support from a rotating contributing editorial board.
